Phase transition kinetics in polydisperse systems
نویسنده
چکیده
The use of moment densities for understanding phase transition kinetics in polydisperse systems is discussed. The role of size partitioning and the distinction between quenched and annealed phase diagrams is emphasised. Polydisperse FloryÈHuggins theory is used as an example, and CahnÈHilliard type equations for the local moment densities are constructed for this model via a random phase approximation. They are used to examine the initial growth rate of density Ñuctuations which are found to reÑect the annealed and quenched spinodal lines in the phase diagram.

Predicting phase equilibria in polydisperse systems
Many materials containing colloids or polymers are polydisperse: they comprise particles with properties (such as particle diameter, charge, or polymer chain length) that depend continuously on one or several parameters. This review focuses on the theoretical prediction of phase equilibria in polydisperse systems; the presence of an effectively infinite number of distinguishable particle specie...
متن کاملDissertation Structure , thermodynamics and phase behavior of a polydisperse colloidal mixture
In this work we have studied the thermodynamic properties and the phase transitions of simple polydisperse systems, where we direct our attention on the fluid phases only. In our study we have treated a polydisperse system as a n-component mixture in the limit n → ∞ where the particle diameters are distributed continously within a range [σmin, σmax] and the concentrations of the various particl...
متن کاملThe effect of polydispersity on colloidal phase transitions
A polydisperse mixture of hard spheres with a continuous range of sizes is a simple model of many colloidal suspensions. A well-known example [1] is poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) stabilised by a thin polymeric layer of poly(12-hydroxystearic acid) and dispersed in a good solvent such as decalin. The colloidal particles in this suspension interact via a short-range repulsion, which is well re...
متن کاملFractionated crystallization in a polydisperse mixture of hard spheres
We consider the nature of the fluid–solid phase transition in a polydisperse mixture of hard spheres. For a sufficiently polydisperse mixture (s.0.085) crystallization occurs with simultaneous fractionation. At the fluid–solid boundary, a broad fluid diameter distribution is split into a number of narrower fractions, each of which then crystallize. The number of crystalline phases increases wit...
متن کاملSeparation and fractionation of order and disorder in highly polydisperse systems.
We study a polydisperse soft-spheres model for colloids by means of microcanonical Monte Carlo simulations. We consider a polydispersity as high as 24%. Although solidification occurs, neither a crystal nor an amorphous state are thermodynamically stable. A finite size scaling analysis reveals that in the thermodynamic limit: (a) the fluid-solid transition is rather a crystal-amorphous phase-se...
